The MCOATT Due Dates are December 30.
What is the MCOATT for Student Teachers?
The Michigan Certificate for
Outstanding Achievement in Teaching with Technology for Student Teaching
is awarded to recognize individuals
who have shown their accomplishments in teaching a unit that demonstrates
advanced uses of technology for student learning during their student
teaching. Teacher candidates from COATT member institutions can apply
for the award by teaching a unit, developing a portfolio to demonstrate
their work, and submitting an application form to COATT after completing
their student teaching experience.
The award is based on achieving
high levels of performance on a set of educational technology standards
for entering teachers known as
the Michigan
Seventh Standard that has been established by the Michigan Department
of Education. Based on the National Standards for Educational Technology
for Teachers (NETS-T) developed by the International Society for
Technology in Education (ISTE), the Seventh Standard is the foundation
for the
COATT performance rubric against which portfolios are judged.
Why should I work for the MCOATT?
Applying for the MCOATT
 |
Contact the COATT
Representative at your university.
Each of the
COATT member institutions has a contact person. You will
find it useful to do this before you begin your student teaching
so you have up-to-date information on what you need to successfully
complete the COATT portfolio. Some of the universities also
have their own web sites with COATT information for their students
along with helpful resources.
|
 |
Develop and teach a unit during your student teaching experience
that integrates technology.
|
 |
Develop your COATT
Portfolio.
Your COATT portfolio is an online
portfolio showcasing your teaching experience and showing how
your unit has met the COATT standards. To help you develop your
portfolio COATT has created a portfolio
template for your use.
For further information on developing your COATT portfolio, check
the portfolio manual.
|
 |
Send your signed
verification form to COATT.
In addition to completing
the application electronically, you will need to get a verification
form signed by your cooperating teacher and your institution's
faculty sponsor. Print a hard copy of the verification form prior
to the portfolio deadline and have it signed by your cooperating
teacher. This signature indicates that your unit plans and related
items were indeed used in the classroom. (COATT does not require
the cooperating teacher to render judgment on the quality of the
applicant's work or on overall performance in practice teaching).
|
 |
Fill out the final
portfolio form.
Once you have completed your
portfolio, you will need to submit a final portfolio
form which
gives us specifics about your portfolio and teaching (title, subject
area, grade level, etc.). This form will tell us you are ready
for your portfolio to be judged. |

Further Information
Why
should I work for the MCOATT?
Winners give many reasons for deciding to submit a portfolio, including
getting recognition for a job well done, improving their potential for
getting the job of their choice when they graduate, or because a favorite
professor or mentor teacher encouraged them to do so. While getting a
great job is a powerful incentive, what MCOATT winners have all said
in the end is that their students benefited from the efforts they made
to use technology and that changed their lives. So consider doing this
because it will help your students as much as because you will get high
honor for your work.
