Michigan's 7th Standard
October 10th will be a full day for educators, concerning developments in technology in the state. The Michigan Department of Education will be hosting the "Implementing the 7th Standard Workshop.” COATT, MACUL and TEAM will also co-sponsor this event.

The 7th standard for pre-service teachers of the state was updated in October, 2002. The updating aligns the 7th Standard with the ISTE guidelines for teachers. Educators will learn how the 7th standard will impact their institutions.

Also included in the plans are poster sessions and breakout sessions to be presented in the afternoon. Mark October 10th on your calendar and be at the Lansing Center, 333 E. Michigan Ave., Lansing, MI from 9:30 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. for a very informative day. (Registration information is available on-line at http://www.coatt.org/mde/index.html).

Announcing COATT Winners for 2003
An awards ceremony for pre-service and in-service teachers who will receive the COATT e-portfolio award for demonstrating the effective use of technology in the classroom to enhance student learning will be held on October 10th from 6- 8 p.m. following the “Implementing the 7th Standard Workshop." Awardees, COATT sponsors, family and friends are invited to attend the ceremony at the Lansing Center, Governor’s Room, 333 E. Michigan, Lansing, MI.

The number of COATT Awards to be given will number 27 this year. This is a significant increase over the 19 awarded to applicants last year. COATT offers an online course entitled “Preparing Teachers for Tomorrow” for preservice teachers on how to use technology in the classroom, as well as information for creating your COATT electronic portfolio. Smithsonian Education
New to the web is the Smithsonian Education website http://www.smithsonianeducation.org/. Brought to the www by the Smithsonian Center for Education and Museum Studies, it provides educators, students and families with resources from the collection and the museum’s programs. The site may be searched by lesson plans, publications and products, websites, fieldtrips, and professional development. Don’t dismiss the fieldtrip search since it can be a great educational trip planner, and serves also as a collective site for museums and collections that offer educational programs to students and teachers.

Preparing Teachers for Tomorrow
COATT offers an online course for Preservice Teachers on how to use technology in the classroom, as well as information for creating your COATT electronic portfolio.  Preparing Teachers for Tomorrow (PTfT) is an interactive program designed by educators for students preparing to be teachers. PTfT focuses on Internet technology integration in the K-12 curriculum exposing preservice teachers to quality educational online resources in the context of effective online activities.
