MI CliMB Online!
Yes, that helpful Michigan product that contains the clarification of each
core area benchmark is now online. If you have not been certain that your
student teachers could have access to this great tool, no more need to worry.
The following website is home to the newly released online version. http://www.miclimb.net/content/
Sometimes You Just Need
to Smile
Each week Crazy4Teachers.com features a cartoon or joke especially for teachers.
The cartoons and jokes are also a unique approach for teaching about current
events, politics and history. The site also contains a teacher's guide with
lesson plans that will give teachers ideas: http://www.theeducatorsnetwork.com/main/funindex.htm
Keeping up to Date
with Handheld Computers in the Classroom
The first book on ideas and examples of handheld use in the K-12 classroom
has been released by Michigan's own Hi-Ce software from the University
of Michigan. The Palm book is a blend of everything from background, technical
knowledge, management, logistics, and reproducible resources, everything an
educator needs when starting to use handhelds in education. The book is available
from ISTE, but you can also visit the Hi-Ce site for information on handhelds
in the classroom. http://www.handheld.hice-dev.org/
Online Training for Internet
Use
Teach for Tomorrow (TfT) is an interactive professional development program
designed by educators focusing on Internet technology integration in the K-12
curriculum. TfT exposes teachers to quality educational online resources in
the context of effective online activities. TfT helps teachers understand how
to use Internet technology and content for instruction, presentation, lesson
planning, research, and collaboration. The TfT program includes in person workshops
as well as an online course. Check out the online course at http://tft.merit.edu.
Registration is free.
In Need of a Rubric?
Rubistar (http://rubistar.4teachers.org/)
is a great site for teachers who are in need of a rubric for student assessment.
They can use already developed rubrics or create their own. The Educators
Network (http://www.theeducatorsnetwork.com/main/rubricfeature.htm)
is home to 40 quality Assessment Rubrics for Middle and High School Teachers.
Actually these can be adapted for use at almost any level, and are great as
guidelines for creating your own rubrics.
National Education Technology
Standards for Students
The National Education Technology Standards for Students were released
in June 1998, NETS for Teachers in June 2000, and NETS for Administrators
(TSSA) in November 2001. The state of Michigan has adopted all three of
these standard sets in their state technology plans, certification, licensure,
curriculum plans, and assessment plans. It should be of interest to pre-service
teachers as to what the state requires students to know in the area of technology.
The International Society of Technology in Education (ISTE) home page can be
found at www.iste.org.
In Need of a Picture?
A great site for graphics is the clipart section of the COACH site (http://clipart.apte.com/october.cfm).
As a mentor teacher, you have probably built your collection of artwork, but
beginning teachers haven't. A caution to you and your student teacher, the
site is copyright friendly but the source, APTE, Inc., needs to be noted. The
copyright restrictions are clearly noted, and can serve as an excellent awareness
of copyright restrictions.
