Stealing Digital Content
The cover article of the July 2004 issue of eSchool News contains interesting
statistics on the knowledge of copyright laws among students and their
continued unlawful downloading of digital materials from the WWW. Only
18% of the 1,100 students interviewed said that they learned about
copyright law from their teachers. The article could serve as a starting
point for the evaluation on the content of some syllabi. See eSchool News on line for the article and related links. (http://eschoolnews.org).
Center
for Applied Research in Technology
CARET, funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, provides results
of research and evaluations of projects conducted by ISTE and their partnership
organizations, ESS and the Sacramento Department of Public Education.
In addition to allowing the user to search resources on current critical
topics in educational technology, CARET also offers an additional reading
list of over 700 references. It is a great site for information on such
research topics such as student learning, curriculum and instruction,
online teaching and learning, professional development, or evaluation
and assessment. (http://caret.iste.org)
The National 4H GIP and GPS Technology
Programs
Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Global Positioning Systems (GPS)
are two exciting technologies that are used in one of the 4-H.Technology
Programs. The United States Department of Agriculture, 4-H, and their
partner the National GIS/GPS Integration Team, recognize the importance
of providing a learning environment where innovative and creative uses
of Geographic Information Systems and Global Positioning Systems will
lead to social, economic, and environmental improvements in their communities.
Their website http://www.tnstate.edu/iager/gisgps/main.htm provides additional
information on GIS and GPS, and the state activities. In addition, CNET
(http://www.cnet.com) gives great reviews on four promising Bluetooth
GPS systems.

Revisiting ALI
The Apple Learning Interchange has been online since the Mac/PC wars.
It is worth a visit again, to see how it has changed. Apple takes full
advantage of the digital media capabilities of the WWW. For an example,
try out the Higher Education Discovery Tour to Race Rocks Marine Protected
Area on an island in the Canadian waters of the Strait of Juan de Fuca.
Controlling the 3600 camera is like a visit to the Straits of Juan de
Fuca. The faculty and staff of Lester B. Pearson College of the Pacific
bring this visit to you. Additional digital materials are supplied by
partners including the George Lucas Foundation, NASA Center for Distance
Learning, Field Museum of Chicago, and Ball State University.
